The Council for Australian Catholic Women met in Sydney last week. Lyn Horner and Sarah Lentern were welcomed as new members of the CACW at this meeting. The CACW exists at the “national level to ensure that the dignity of women is honoured and their gifts are given space to flourish for the sake of the Church’s life and mission”. (ACBC Social Justice Statement 2000)
These are the current members of the CACW:
- Sr Josephine Armour OP
- Mrs Patricia Banister – Chair
- Fr Mark Freeman
- Mrs Lyn Horner
- Ms Sarah Lentern
- Ms Natalie L’Huillier
- Bishop Michael Malone
- Ms Beth Nolen
- Ms Tricia Walsh
Issues discussed at the CACW meeting included:
- Process of meeting with women when visiting dioceses to ensure women’s stories are captured
- Ministries undertaken by women in the Church in Australia. How do we alert others in the Church about these?
- Report following the visit to the Diocese of Darwin
- English translation of the Roman Missal and upcoming implementation
In 2010 the CACW will be meeting in Canberra in May, Sale in August and Sydney in November.
The Travelling Photographic Exhibition is continuing to journey around Australia. In February it will be displayed in Canberra and will move to Toowoomba on the 20 March. Information about locations and times will be made available in the future.
This year is the 10th anniversary of the 2000 Social Justice Statement focusing on Women in the Church. It is an opportunity to review the national decisions and proposals for action in dioceses listed in this statement. These are available in the Social Justice Statement on our website in the “About Us” section. I look forward to hearing of women’s ongoing participation in the Church throughout this year.
Best wishes,
Kim Davis |
