The feast of the annunciation |
|
Dear Friends,
I can hardly believe Easter is almost upon us. Just over two months have passed since I succeeded this office from Kimberly Davis in mid-January 2012 and I apologise for the hiatus of the WomenMatter e-newsletter. February flew by in a series of meetings and travel. I met with the Council of Australian Catholic Women (CACW) on February 10 in Brisbane. You can read a summary of this below. A week later was the first meeting of the Australian Catholic Council for Lay Pastoral Ministry (ACCLPM), a council that will develop strong organic links with the CACW. Then towards the end of February I met with the Bishops Commission for Church Ministry.

Advent and Christmas wishes |
Dear friends, this is our last Women Matter for 2011, and we pray that you have a happy and Holy Christmas. In 2011, we have a new staff for the OPW with Director Donella Johnston and Fellowship Coordinator Andrea Dean joining us at the Braddon Secretariat. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue the wonderful mission forged by Therese Vassarotti, Sr Ruth Durick and most recently Kimberly Davis. Lots of blessing to you and yours! |

Dear Friends
In a short time I will be finishing work in the Office for the Participation of Women. The last five years have been an extraordinary experience for me. I have been inspired and energised by the contribution women make to the Church throughout Australia. I have worked with women and men in towns and cities from Geraldton to Townsville and am constantly amazed by the life-giving ways people are involved in the life and mission of the Church.
It has been a privilege to work with many of you on projects and in planning gatherings in your local areas. I am particularly grateful to the diocesan contacts for women who have supported and brought to life national ideas, projects and resources. Without you these initiatives would still be sitting on a shelf! Your dedication to continuing to promote, recognise and celebrate the contribution of women is appreciated. Thank you for your hospitality and generosity when I have been in your home town. What wonderful memories I am taking with me!

Women who have forged a way |
|
Dear Friends,
There is much to celebrate this week about the women who have forged a way in the Church, even at times with some resistance.
It was the feast day of St Teresa of Avila on 15 October, and her prayer is included above.
We also celebrate today one year since the Canonisation of Australia's first Saint Mary MacKillop.
You will read some of the story of Dr Sr Mary Glowrey, a woman who the Catholic Women's League are holding up as a candidate for Sainthood also.
More pertinent even however are the stories included of inspiring women who are present in our parishes, doing immense works of service, and sharing of themselves in the most extraordinary ways.
We hope you enjoy this edition of women matter. Please feel free to send us any stories, thoughts or prayers you think might be of interest.
Many blessings for the weeks ahead,
Beth Doherty

Dear friends, Last week, I was invited to give a 90 minute workshop on "Communicating the word: Evangelisation using new media" at a conference called "Living Mercy", a celebration to mark 150 years of the Mercy Sisters in Australia. And it was a remarkable moment to observe the contribution these women have made, and are making to the Catholic Church in this country - in fields as diverse as education, communications, ministry, aged care, right through to advocacy on behalf of landmine victims, as is the case of Brisbane Mercy Sr Denise Coghlan RSM. And I wondered, where would this Church be without women? These apostolic religious sisters, many of them in thei more elderly years have given their lives at the service of the Gospel. I hope that with their courage, wisdom and inspiration, younger women in the Church too will discover their mission, vocation and calling - in perhaps new and charismatic ways. Best wishes, Beth Doherty
